Differences in Visas
-
F-1 visas are granted for full-time undergraduate or graduate studies.
-
M-1 visas are granted for technical school students. M-1 students who wish to later transfer to a college, university or language school will not be able to automatically switch to
a F-1 visa. F-1 students, on the other hand, may change more easily to
a M-1 visa if they transfer to a technical school.
-
J-1 visas are granted to exchange visitors, who are consulting, training, teaching or doing research in the United States.
Securing a Visa
After you are accepted for admission, you will receive a document from the academic institution or sponsoring organization depending on your particular situation. Once you've received this form, you may begin the visa application process. The document you receive will be either an
I-20A-B form (for
a F-1 visa) or an
I-20M-N for a M-1 visa or an
IAP-66 form for a J-1 visa.
