Are you confused about the various types of higher education
institutions in this country? Here's some help.
University:
Can be private or public. Always offers a
combination of liberal arts, sciences and professional programs.
Includes both undergraduate and graduate programs. May specialize
in doctorate programs and research. Usually larger institutions;
some enroll a very large number of students. (As high as 50,000!)
Offers variety of on-campus and off-campus housing
options.
College:
Typically private, but can be public. Offers
a four-year program that specializes in undergraduate education,
usually in the liberal arts. Does not offer graduate degrees.
A four-year degree from an accredited college, however, can be
transferred to any university graduate program. Offers variety
of on-campus and off-campus housing options.
Community College:
Typically public. Offers a two year
undergraduate education. Upon completion, student receives an
Associate in Arts and Sciences degree. This can be transferred
to a four-year college or university. Has lower English-language
and academic requirements. Excellent option for foreign students
who need to strengthen language skills. Also provides technical
and vocational training. Cost much less than other options. Rarely
has on-campus housing.
