Are you interested in attending an art school in the United
States? Here's some advice to get you started:
Several Options
Basically, there are two different types of art programs at US
Colleges and Universities.
1. Professional Schools are often associated with art museums
or institutions with a long history of specialization in the
fine arts; these schools can be compared to Music Conservatories.
2. Art Programs are offered by colleges and universities throughout
the United States.
Professional Schools
Professional Schools seek students with specific talents in the
disciplines associated with the fine arts. These include drawing,
painting, sculpture, graphic design and other crafts.
Students are expected to show a strong portfolio with the best
examples (20-25 pieces) of their work. This would include a collection
of slides, photographs and original works, which displayed creative
talent. This portfolio is judged by the department chairperson,
faculty within a department, and sometimes by alumni who have
established themselves in a particular field.
Colleges & Universities
The second option is the art department at colleges and universities.
To be admitted into these programs, you'll need a strong academic
background, as well as a strong concentration in the arts.
Unlike the professional art schools, you'll be expected to have
a broad area of expertise rather than emphasis on a specific talent.
So be prepared to demonstrate academic success and submit a portfolio
that reveals artistic ability in creativity, color, rendering,
design and construction in equal amounts.
Recently, many US schools have re-adjusted their policies regarding
funding for international students. Today, it's easier than before
for highly qualified international students to be considered for
special scholarships. This is especially true, because of the
intense competition for talented students.
Keep in mind there are art programs in rural settings and in
major metropolitan areas. The urban schools provide access to
nearby museums and galleries. The small rural colleges are ideal
for students seeking a warm, nurturing environment. Rural
colleges arrange for students to travel to larger cities regularly for
enrichment.
English Matters
Students are expected to have a TOEFLŪ score of 550 or better.
In any case, well-written letters of intent and persuasive recommendation
letters are highly advisable as part of the application process.
If your English isn't strong enough, you may be asked to attend
Summer Intensive English Programs. Or you may be asked to enroll
in an English
as a Second Language program.
Something for Everyone
With so many options, you are sure to find the right program for
you. Just be sure to learn as much as possible about the various
schools, so you can find the situation best suited to your career
goals and artistic development.
